- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The Northrop F-5N "Adversary Fighter" Red 117, BuNo 761533, operated by VFC-111 in 2017, represents a unique second life for a classic Cold War-era design. Flown by the United States Navy, the Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter was extensively upgraded and repurposed as a dissimilar air combat training platform. The F-5N variant, derived from former Swiss Air Force airframes, was modified with modern avionics and systems to simulate potential adversary aircraft for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps pilots.
- Assigned to VFC-111 Sundowners, Red 117 played a key role in training naval aviators for modern air combat scenarios. Based at Naval Air Station Key West, the squadron provided high-end adversary support for fleet replacement squadrons and carrier air wings preparing for deployment. The aircraft routinely participated in large-scale training exercises, simulating enemy tactics and aircraft performance to sharpen U.S. Navy pilots' dogfighting and beyond-visual-range combat skills.
- While not deployed in combat operations, the F-5N fleet supported readiness for conflicts such as the Global War on Terrorism, including operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. By replicating agile, high-performance threat aircraft, Red 117 and its sister F-5Ns helped ensure carrier air wings remained prepared for potential engagements against peer and near-peer adversaries. The aircraft's role in adversary training made it an essential but often unseen contributor to modern naval air superiority.
- This 1:72 scale model is a striking tribute to one of the Navy's most important training platforms. Featuring authentic Sundowners markings and the bold red adversary scheme, it captures the speed and aggressor role of the F-5N in modern naval aviation training. Perfect for collectors of contemporary military aircraft, this replica celebrates the hidden side of air combat preparation, add it to your collection today for a dynamic and distinctive centerpiece.
