- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The McDonnell Douglas MD-90 registered HZ-API served with Saudia during a period of modernization and expansion for the airline's domestic and regional network. The McDonnell Douglas MD-90 was developed as an advanced successor to the popular MD-80 series, featuring more fuel-efficient engines, updated avionics, and improved passenger comfort. Saudia became one of the key operators of the MD-90 in the Middle East, using the aircraft to strengthen connections between major Saudi cities and regional destinations.
- HZ-API operated during the 1990s and early 2000s, a time when Saudi Arabia's aviation sector was experiencing rapid growth driven by increased business travel, tourism, and religious pilgrimage traffic. The MD-90's efficient performance made it especially well suited for medium-haul routes linking hubs such as Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam. With its quieter International Aero Engines V2500 powerplants and upgraded flight systems, the aircraft offered improved operational economics and reliability compared to earlier jetliners in the fleet.
- The MD-90 represented one of the final major commercial aircraft programs developed under the McDonnell Douglas name before the company merged with Boeing. Aircraft like HZ-API helped bridge the transition between classic analog-era airliners and the more digitally advanced jets that followed. For Saudia, the type played an important role in fleet modernization while maintaining the airline's reputation for dependable regional service across the Middle East and beyond.
- This 1:200 scale model is a beautiful tribute to a distinctive era in Middle Eastern commercial aviation. Featuring authentic Saudia livery and the sleek lines of the MD-90, it captures the elegance and technological evolution of this important airliner. Perfect for collectors of modern jetliners and airline history, this replica brings together classic McDonnell Douglas design and Saudi aviation heritage; add it to your collection today for a refined and memorable display piece.
