HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Vought F4U-1 Corsair, known as "Daphne 'C,'" was the aircraft of 2nd Lt. James N. Cupp, a 12-victory ace of Marine Fighter Squadron 213 (VMF-213), nicknamed the "Hell Hawks." During July 1943, VMF-213 was stationed on Guadalcanal, a critical Allied stronghold in the Solomon Islands campaign. The Corsair, with its distinctive inverted gull wings and powerful R-2800 Double Wasp engine, provided the Marines with an edge in the Pacific Theater, excelling in dogfights and ground-attack missions.
2nd Lt. James Cupp emerged as one of the squadron's most skilled and aggressive pilots. Flying "Daphne 'C'," named after a personal connection, Cupp participated in numerous air engagements against Japanese forces. His twelve confirmed aerial victories contributed to the Allied effort to achieve air superiority over the Solomons. The Corsair's speed, climb rate, and heavy armament gave Cupp the tools he needed to dominate the skies, making it a favorite among Marine pilots.
VMF-213 and its Corsairs played a pivotal role in securing Guadalcanal and the surrounding islands, which were crucial to the Allied advance toward Japan. Their missions included intercepting enemy bombers, escorting Allied bombers, and providing close air support to ground troops. The Corsair's rugged design also allowed it to withstand harsh conditions and sustain damage in combat, ensuring the pilots could return to base safely.
This 1:72 scale model is a tribute to the bravery of 2nd Lt. James N. Cupp and the men of VMF-213. With accurate detailing and authentic squadron markings, it captures the essence of this iconic warbird and the daring missions flown by the "Hell Hawks." A stunning addition to any collection, it celebrates a pivotal chapter in aviation history.
