- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The Fokker 50 was a Dutch twin-turboprop regional airliner developed by Fokker as the successor to the highly successful Fokker F27 Friendship. Introduced in the late 1980s, the Fokker 50 retained the proven high-wing configuration of its predecessor while incorporating modern Pratt & Whitney Canada PW125B turboprop engines, updated avionics, and improved aerodynamic features. Designed for short- and medium-haul routes, it offered excellent performance from regional airports and became a popular choice for airlines operating demanding domestic and regional networks.
- Registration PH-AVJ was associated with the Fokker 50 and carried the colors of Avianca Colombia, one of South America's oldest and most historically significant airlines. Avianca developed an extensive domestic and regional network connecting Colombia's major cities, where turboprop aircraft were particularly valuable for routes linking airports with limited runway infrastructure or lower passenger demand. The Fokker 50's efficiency and reliability made it well suited to this environment, allowing airlines to maintain frequent regional services while offering greater capacity and comfort than smaller commuter aircraft.
- The Fokker 50 played an important role in the transition from older-generation turboprops to modern regional aviation. Aircraft operating in Colombia faced demanding conditions, including mountainous terrain, rapidly changing weather, and a network of airports spread across a geographically diverse country. Unlike military aircraft, PH-AVJ was a commercial airliner and was not associated with armed conflicts. Its historical importance instead comes from its contribution to regional passenger transportation and the development of efficient turboprop operations in Colombia and throughout Latin America.
- This 1:200 scale Avianca Colombia Fokker 50, registration PH-AVJ, captures the distinctive high-wing profile, twin-turboprop configuration, and classic Avianca appearance of this important regional airliner, making it a distinctive addition for collectors of commercial aviation and historic Latin American airline models.
