HISTORY ASPECTS:
The North American P-51D Mustang, serial number 44-15152 and marked QI-T Jersey Jerk, was flown by Major Donald J. Strait, the commanding officer of the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, United States Army Air Forces. Based at Martlesham Heath in Suffolk, England, in 1945, this aircraft and its pilot played a critical role during the final stages of the Allied air campaign over Europe. Major Strait, a native of New Jersey, named his aircraft with the affectionate moniker Jersey Jerk, combining humor and pride for his home state.
The P-51D Mustang was widely regarded as one of the finest fighter aircraft of World War II, with its combination of speed, range, and agility. Equipped with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the D variant also featured a bubble canopy for improved pilot visibility and six .50 caliber machine guns. Major Strait and Jersey Jerk flew escort missions for heavy bombers during the strategic bombing of Nazi Germany and also engaged in ground-attack roles as the Allies pushed into occupied Europe. Strait tallied 13.5 confirmed aerial victories, making him one of America's aces of the war.
By early 1945, the Luftwaffe had been significantly weakened, but American fighter pilots like Major Strait continued to face aggressive enemy resistance, particularly from FW 190s and Me 262 jets. During this time, the 356th Fighter Group provided critical air cover for bombing raids and helped suppress Germany's diminishing air defenses. Jersey Jerk became an iconic part of the 9th Air Force's fighter effort in the closing months of World War II, symbolizing both personal valor and the Mustang's dominance over the skies of Europe.
This 1:72 scale model of Jersey Jerk meticulously recreates the aircraft flown by Major Donald Strait, with authentic squadron markings, weathered detail, and historical accuracy. A true standout in any WWII collection, it honors a legendary pilot and the Mustang's enduring legacy in the air war over Europe.
